Asafa Powell was the star attraction at the Houston Track Classic, but the local high school athletes stole the show. Powell — a Jamaican gold-medal winner who has run the fourth-fastest 100-meter dash in history — was on hand at Tennessee’s largest regular-season meet, hosted by Houston High. And he likely would have been impressed at some of the standout individual performers. Houston’s Zoe Marsh set a pair of meet records and added a third as part of a relay team. Crosstown’s Austin McCall clocked the fastest 200-meter time in the state so far this spring and also won the 400. Southwind’s Karlisa Mungen won two sprints and was a part of two winning relays. And Ashton Hearn of CBHS threw the discuss farther than anyone in Tennessee has in the last three years. If this keeps up, it should be another good local medal haul at Spring Fling, which is just over a month away. Elsewhere, The Daily Memphian continued to recognize the top athletes from the winter with our girls basketball and swimming postseason awards. Boys basketball is still to come. And as always, we’d appreciate your help in saluting our best prep competitors. Coach and stat-keepers can send in their scores, highlights and top performers from each game, either by emailing jvarlas@dailymemphian.com or on X, formerly known as Twitter, @johnvarlas.
