Don’t forget the groove.

Tuesday, Nov. 24, the Memphis Grizzlies made an addition to the usual “Grit and Grind” model. In 2020-21, it will be grit, grind, and ... (play the funky background instrumental) groove.

In a tribute to Isaac Hayes and Stax Records, Memphis will wear special “Soul City” edition uniforms this season, complete with African kente cloth side and neck trim and gold and turquoise secondary colors to match the scheme of Hayes’ 1972 El Dorado Cadillac.

The look was wildly popular among fans and players on social media, and star point guard Ja Morant said the Grizzlies have the “coldest” uniforms in the NBA.

Tyus Jones, Morant’s backcourt counterpart, is also a big fan of the new look. He suggested the Grizzlies switch between the teal Vancouver throwbacks they wore last season, the black throwbacks they are set to wear this season and the special “Soul City” jerseys.

The Grizzlies’ uniform release comes after several other NBA teams already debuted their new city edition looks. Memphis also avoided a leak of the uniform, unlike Chicago, Dallas, Brooklyn and Miami.

Although the new Memphis jerseys are not as loud or vibrant as some of the other teams across the league, the look is still a perfect tribute to an iconic hometown figure. It should come as no surprise they were met with near-unanimous approval.
