Welcome back to the Tigers Football Insider, where we bring you the latest news and analysis from The Daily Memphian’s Steven Johnson each week.

It didn’t take long for former Memphis standout Tahj Washington to find a new home.

Less than a week after the Freshman All-American entered his name into the transfer portal, Washington announced late Tuesday night that he was committing to the USC Trojans.

The NCAA is expected to pass a one-time transfer waiver sometime this offseason, which would allow Washington and other transfers to play immediately in the fall.

Washington had 743 yards and seven total touchdowns last year for Memphis. And he opted to transfer after failing to come to an agreement with Ryan Silverfield on his role for the upcoming season.

The Trojans are stacked with receiver talent, but Washington’s explosiveness will be a valuable asset to USC’s pass happy offense.

Washington is the third Memphis starter to transfer to a Power Five program. T.J. Carter and Obinna Eze transferred to TCU earlier this offseason. And, this could be a new reality for the Tigers.

Yes, Silverfield will be just as active in the portal and may have already landed Washington’s replacement with Shamar Nash. However, it could be a reoccurring theme for the Tigers to lose a starter or two to the Power Five.

In the long run, both parties should be fine. Memphis has a number of talented receivers to lean on in Washington’s absence, and Washington now, presumably, has the role he wants on a bigger stage in L.A.
