Welcome back to The To-Do List, where Daily Memphian staffers highlight can’t-miss events and fun activities heading into the weekend.
Fall means fairs and this weekend boasts two longtime Memphis staples in the Mid-South Fair and Pink Palace Crafts Fair. Plus: Dance, rock and food trucks.
Mid-South Fair at the Landers Center, starting Thursday:
Turkey legs and funnel cakes. Pig races and petting zoos. Ferris wheels and live music. I don’t know if any of those things were at the first Mid-South Fair in 1856 (pig races, maybe), but that’s how you fair circa 2021. Country mega star Sam Hunt will also be performing as part of the fair on Friday night, Sept. 24. The Mid-South Fair runs through Oct. 3 at Landers Center, 4560 Venture Drive in Southaven. Gonerfest at Railgarten, Thursday-Sunday:
The 18th edition of the punk and garage-rock festival put on by Cooper-Young’s Goner Records will return to the stage after a fully virtual 2020 festival, with all shows outdoors at Railgarten and with proof of vaccination required for admission. Each day is also available via streaming. Headliners include New Orleans’ Quintron & Miss Pussycat (Thursday, Sept. 23), Memphis’ Reigning Sound (Friday, Sept. 24) and Michigan’s the Spits (Saturday, Sept. 25). Collage Dance Collective Grand Opening Celebration, Friday and Saturday:
Collage Dance Collective’s 11th annual gala will be the first in its new, can’t-miss building at Tillman Street and Sam Cooper Boulevard. Friday is the (ticketed) gala featuring performances by singers Eric Benet and Memphis’ Cameron Bethany, dance performances from the ballet’s professional company as well as youth ensemble, as well as food from chefs Erling Jensen and Phillip Ashley Rix. Masks, proof of COVID vaccination and a negative test within 72 hours are required. Saturday is the (free) community day featuring dancers from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Syncopated Ladies, Memphis’ Grizz Girls, Nashville Ballet, Ballet Memphis, New Ballet Ensemble, Studio 413, SubRoy Studios, Kindrid Spirit, as well as Collage’s professional company and youth ensemble. Saturday’s event also includes food trucks, live music, tours of the building and giveaways. Gala: $150-225. 6:30-9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24. Community Celebration: Free. Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25.
Pink Palace Crafts Fair at Audubon Park, Friday-Sunday:
The Pink Palace Crafts Fair will bring nearly 150 artists and craftspeople to Audubon Park for its 49th edition, with everything from pottery to handmade jewelry to woodwork and more. With live music and food trucks each day. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26. Single day general admission tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for kids. See here for more info.

National Civil Rights Museum, Saturday:
The National Civil Rights Museum is celebrating its 30th anniversary with free admission and a new exhibition. Typically the museum offers free admission on Mondays (for Tennessee residents) from 3 p.m. until closing. For Saturday, visitors are asked to reserve their passes, for up to four people per party, in advance. A new exhibit, “The Transformative Journey of the National Civil Rights Museum,” will showcase the museum’s beginnings and developments since its opening on Sept. 28, 1991. Free. 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25.
Soulful Food Truck Festival at Tiger Lane, Sunday:
The football Tigers will follow their rousing win last weekend against Mississippi State back at the Liberty Bowl at 2:30 p.m. Saturday as they face the University of Texas-San Antonio. But the good times — and good eats — at Tiger Lane this weekend won’t end there. The Soulful Food Truck Festival will bring 24 food trucks along with live music and other food vendors to the city’s best tailgate spot. Jennifer Biggs had more here.
