Welcome to this week’s Tigers Basketball Insider. Below you’ll find the latest news and analysis from The Daily Memphian’s Steven Johnson, John Martin and Geoff Calkins.
Memphis’ roster is far from being complete with five scholarships available for transfers.
But regardless of who coach Penny Hardaway decides to bring in, there’s one fact that’s going to remain the same.
The Tigers will need important contributions from Johnathan Lawson, one of the youngest players on the roster.
If you look at the Tigers roster it’s mainly seniors with the exception of Lawson and Tadarius Jacobs.
That means that Hardaway will have to rebuild a massive chunk of the roster again next offseason. You know what would make that easier? Having a young player that can be the centerpiece to build around.
The first step is to show that on the court and Memphis has plenty of opportunity on the wings for Lawson to potentially grab a starting spot alongside Kendric Davis.
There were whispers of Lawson impressing early last preseason, especially on the ball as a facilitator. After spending a year watching the Tigers storm to the NCAA Tournament, Lawson should get his opportunity to show what he’s done behind the scenes to fans.
For both this year and the future of the program, Lawson’s progress with his development will be a major storyline to watch.
More from your Insider:
Tigers coach Penny Hardaway is seeking more help from transfers, and Rasheed Wallace is likely heading west.
“There’s no telling if Penny Hardaway’s new restaurant will live up to expectations. But it should be better than Cal’s!”
For example, there are grit cakes, filled with your choice of shrimp, salmon croquettes, chicken, pork or vegetables.
