This week, see artist Jamond Bullock’s new mural while you slice the pool at Gooch Park, get a glimpse into artist Tangela’s “Splendid Mind” at Crosstown Arts and catch the world premiere of “Shanktown” at TheatreWorks.
‘How Rednecks Saved Hollywood: An Evening with Joe Bob Briggs’ at Crosstown Theater, Thursday:
Film critic and television host Joe Bob Briggs will present 200 film clips and stills from grindhouse and mainstream movies to review the history of rednecks in America at Crosstown Theater on July 7. (Courtesy Crosstown Arts)
As a film critic, television host and comic performer, Texan Joe Bob Briggs is a well-known champion of drive-in movies and “trash” cinema of various genres. In this traveling presentation, Briggs will use clips and film stills to explore the history of the “redneck” archetype in American movies. Expect commentary on Burt Reynolds, “Forrest Gump,” “Gator Bait” and more. 7 p.m.$40. See here for more info. — Chris Herrington
‘Crystals, Cards, & Cannabis’ workshop at Work & Play Studio, Friday:
It doesn’t get any more “woo-woo” than this. This two-hour workshop offers a deep dive into the use of crystals for relaxation and finding clarity and an intro into reading Tarot and oracle cards for divination purposes. Plus, a Ganja Yoga-certified educator will offer a look at the purported healing properties of cannabis. Ounce of Hope, which runs a local aquaponic cannabis farm and sells CBD and Delta-8 products, will be on-hand with samples. 7 to 9 p.m. $30. 2288 Central Ave. Click here for tickets. — Bianca Phillips
‘The Masked Singer’ at the Orpheum Theatre, Friday:
The national tour for Fox’s “The Masked Singer” will stop at the Orpheum Theatre on July 8. (Courtesy Orpheum Theatre)
In perhaps one of the weirdest reality competition shows, Fox’s “The Masked Singer” features celebrities disguised as monsters, giant babies, fuzzy pigs, robots, aliens and other creatures performing in front of an audience, which, in turn, must try to guess who is behind the mask. The show’s national tour will stop in Memphis on Friday, when a local celebrity will take the stage — masked, of course. The audience will be asked to decipher clues to guess the performer’s identity. Grammy-nominated singer Natasha Bedingfield is hosting the 50-city tour. 8 p.m. $39.75-$99.75. 203 S. Main St. Click here for tickets. — Phillips
‘Shanktown’ at TheatreWorks, opening Friday:
Playhouse on the Square will present the world premiere of “Shanktown” at Theatreworks from July 8 through 24. This new play, written by Nashville playwright Mary Donnet Johnson, focuses on family dynamics and tackles contemporary issues, such as gun control, racism, disability, health care inequity and LGBTQ+ equality. That all sounds pretty heavy, but the play has been billed as “an ancient Greek tragedy with modern-day laughs.” The script for “Shanktown” was the winner of the 2021 NewWorks@TheWorks playwriting competition. 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. on Sundays. $30. 2085 Monroe Ave. Click here for tickets. — Phillips
Block party and ‘Slice’ pool mural dedication at Gooch Park, Saturday:
The UrbanArt Commission and the H.U.G Neighborhood Park Friends will celebrate the official unveiling and dedication of Jamond Bullock’s new pool mural on July 9. (Courtesy UrbanArt Commission)
UrbanArt Commission and the H.U.G. Neighborhood Park Friends will be on hand to officially unveil and dedicate Memphis artist Jamond Bullock’s new “Slice” mural. “Slice” or “slicing” is also the name of a style of diving, practiced by many Black Memphians, that emphasizes bravado and individuality. At the pool party, there will be music, snow cones, and of course, the cool pool water. 10 to 11 a.m. Free. 1974 Hunter Ave. Click here for more information. — Elle Perry
‘E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial’ 40th anniversary screening at Black Lodge, Saturday:
I’ll confess: I bailed on “Stranger Things” midway through the first season. I don’t know if they ever got to flying bicycles, but as someone who grew up in the 1980s watching Steven Spielberg movies and reading Stephen King paperbacks, it was all a little on the nose. I don’t crave nostalgia that badly. No nostalgia necessary here: Spielberg’s “E.T.” holds up. A legit popular classic, it’s about cute kids and a cuter alien in search of friendship and product-placed peanut-butter candies, sure, but it’s probably really about the suburbs and divorce, and a latch-key kid’s experience of both. Black Lodge, the Crosstown neighborhood cathedral to movie culture, will screen it to commemorate the film’s 40th anniversary. House-made Reese’s Pieces ice cream will be offered for the occasion. 6:30 p.m. Free. See here for more info. — Herrington
‘Splendid Mind’ live session at The Green Room at Crosstown Arts, Saturday:

The show includes a DJ set from WYXR “Funkytown” host STH MEMPHIS JEFF. Click here for more information. 7 p.m. doors, 7:30 show. $15 advance, $20 day of show. 1350 Concourse Ave. #280. —Perry
