Ja Morant plays hero as often as anyone else in the NBA.
But even the best players in the game can’t carry their team to victory every time. On Wednesday night in Portland, the Grizzlies turned to someone else. It was a reminder of what a luxury that can be.
Memphis entered the fourth quarter against the Portland Trail Blazers leading by six points. Before two minutes had elapsed, the Grizzlies had expanded the lead to 15.
If you went to bed at that point, it is hard to blame you. By then, it was already approaching midnight in Memphis. They had it in the bag — until they didn’t.
The Grizzlies lost that lead as quickly as they gained it, surrendering a 19-2 run over a 4-minute span that evened the game at 96. Suddenly, an already weird road trip that featured illnesses and injuries was in danger of ending on a bad note.
So they did what they always do. They ‘called 12.’
It rang, then rang some more, and then Desmond Bane grabbed it before it could go to voicemail.
