A couple years ago, Kennedy Chandler was a high school basketball player cashing in on the opportunity of a lifetime. Now that experience is paying off for the Memphis Grizzlies.
When the coronavirus shut down the world of organized basketball in 2020, pickup hoops was all that survived. The best players in the city joined forces for private scrimmage sessions inside of a closed gymnasium in North Mississippi.
Chandler, who was set to attend Sunrise Christian in Kansas, was there. So was Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant.
Instantly, the two players formed a bond only point guards can understand. Chandler called Morant his “big bro,” and harped on how “crazy” it was that he had built a friendship with such a high-profile NBA star.
They had no idea that they would soon be teammates – Chandler was selected in the second round by the Grizzlies this summer – or that it would be Chandler stepping into the rotation while Morant misses time with a sprained ankle two years later.
