The Early Word: Midtown man killed leaving Zinnie’s; Arrests made in Live Lounge shooting

Good morning, Memphis. I hope you’re ready to let the good times roll today, because it’s Feb. 21, Fat Tuesday! If you haven’t made your king cake yet, here’s a recipe from deep down in The Daily Memphian archives.

Or if you’d rather have someone else do the cooking, our own Jennifer Biggs has this guide to local Shrove Tuesday pancake suppers.

The Memphis City Council will hear an update from Memphis Police this morning on the internal investigation into Tyre Nichols’ death, and they’ll vote on the damage deposit agreement for Memphis In May International Festival to use Tom Lee Park.

THE NEED TO KNOW

Beauty Shop manager killed leaving Zinnie’s: The victim of an early morning shooting on Saturday, Feb. 18, near Zinnie’s in Midtown has been identified as Kevin “Shea” Grauer, 55. The shooting occurred near S. Belvedere and Lockett Place around midnight, and Grauer’s friend, who works at Zinnie’s, said Grauer had stopped into the bar for a short visit. Grauer worked at Karen Carrier’s Beauty Shop for 18 years and recently worked on the sets of “Bluff City Law” and “Young Rock.” “There was nobody like Shea. ... Everything he did he did to perfection, and he would light up any room,” said Carrier. “Everyone wanted to be around him.”

Two arrests made in Whitehaven shootings: Two people, Ladarious Marion, 21, and Julius Freeman, 21, have been arrested and charged in two Sunday morning shootings in Whitehaven that left one person dead and 12 injured. Marion, a former Tennessee Army National Guardsman, is the accused shooter, and Freeman is accused of driving Marion and handing him a rifle. The first shooting occurred inside Live Lounge at 1482 East Shelby Dr., and a second shooting occurred in the club’s parking lot. The owner of Live Lounge is seeking a special use permit to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages, and the Memphis City Council will take that up today.

Autura Eason-Williams

Teen accused in Eason-Williams’ slaying out on bond: Miguel Andrade, the teen accused of killing of Rev. Autura Eason-Williams, is out on bond. Eason-Williams, a district superintendent for the Tennessee-Western Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church, was killed during a carjacking in front of her Whitehaven home on July 18. Andrade, 15, is the accused shooter. The alleged getaway driver, Brayan Carrillo, 19, remains in custody, and a third suspect, Eduard Tabora, 21, is awaiting a decision from a grand jury.

QUOTED

Bro, you have to level up each day, and every day I’ve killed every fit. ... This was the best I have ever dressed.

— Memphis Grizzlies power forward Jaren Jackson Jr.
NBA All-Star weekend offered the fashionable Jackson a chance to show off his style. He changed clothes, twice, sometimes three times per day, and he had several pieces shipped to Salt Lake City from Milan, Italy. One outfit was giving off some serious yeti vibes.

THE NICE TO KNOW

High Noon spirit-based drinks line the shelves at Joe’s Wines & Liquor. (Mark Weber/The Daily Memphian)

High time for High Noon in grocery stores? You may have heard there “ain’t no laws when you’re drinking Claws,” but turns out there are. White Claw and other hard seltzers are classified as beer, and that means Tennessee grocery stores are allowed to sell them. But spirit-based cocktails, like High Noon, can only be sold in liquor stores. Newly proposed legislation would allow grocery stores to sell those ready-to-drink cocktails. Some grocery store and liquor store owners are coming down on either side of the issue.

Lush, a plant-based skincare company, will soon open a location in the Shops of Saddle Creek in Germantown. (STRF/STAR MAX/IPx/AP)

Tacos and bath bombs: The Shops of Saddle Creek will soon be home to a new Lush cosmetics store and Shelby County’s first Local Lime eatery. U.K.-based Lush sells plant-based bath and skincare products, and though Lush has operated shops in Memphis before, its previous locations have since closed. Local Lime is a Mexican restaurant with locations in Rogers and Little Rock, Arkansas. (I’m a fan of both Lush and Local Lime, so it sounds like this Midtowner needs to get her passport for a Germantown day trip.)

It’s time for another Grizzlies Glossary, so that all fans are prepared with the appropriate Grizz reference at all times. (Mark Humphrey/AP file)

Do you speak Grizz? We’re well into our third decade of Memphis Grizzlies basketball, and get this: Kids who were born the year the Grizzlies moved to Memphis are old enough to drink. There’s a new generation of Grizz culture developing, and with that comes new lingo. The Daily Memphian’s Chris Herrington has revived his old Memphis Flyer Grizz glossary — which dates back to 2013 — with updated terms for the modern era. From alley-oops and “we here” to jaggles and Ja Morant’s favorite suffix (“-skii”), you’ll find it all broken down and organized alphabetically.

The Lakeland Municipal Planning & Design Review Commission rejected a site plan for a new Dollar General store at 10410 U.S. 70. (Patrick Lantrip/The Daily Memphian file)

A dollar store short: Lakeland’s planning and design commission rejected a site plan for a new Dollar General store on U.S. 70. Last month, Lakeland placed a one-year moratorium on new commercial development along that highway. The Dollar General application was submitted before the moratorium took effect, but commissioners and Lakeland residents had other concerns. The commission also rejected an amendment to The Lake District’s plan that would add more age-restricted apartments, despite pleas from project developer Yehuda Netanel.

WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT

Congrats to Memphis Grizzlies point guard Tyus Jones and his wife, Carrie Jones, who are now the proud parents of Journey Elizabeth. She was conveniently born on Saturday, Feb. 18, during the NBA All-Star break.

Laissez les bons temps rouler, y’all!
