Welcome back to the Tigers Football Insider, where we bring you the latest news and analysis from The Daily Memphian’s Frank Bonner II, Geoff Calkins and Tim Buckley each week.
The home-and-home series the Tigers announced Wednesday with the Southern Miss is the rekindling of an old yearly matchup between the two schools.
The first game between the Tigers and Golden Eagles dates back to the 1935 season when Southern Miss beat Memphis 12-0. The two teams played again the following year and then didn’t see each other until Memphis traveled to Southern Miss in 1952.
That was the start of a yearly series that lasted six decades. The 1980 season was the only year that Memphis didn’t see Southern Miss from 1952-2012. The Golden Eagles won nearly double the amount of times as Memphis during that span. Southern Miss leads the all-time series 40-22-1 but times have changed in the 11 years since Memphis faced the Golden Eagles.
The Tigers only had seven winning seasons from 1990-2012 and posted an 8-15 record against Southern Miss during that time frame. Memphis has now turned into a program that had seven consecutive winning seasons from 2014-2020 and hasn’t had a losing record since 2013.
Southern Miss is coming off a 7-6 record that included a 27-24 win over the 2022 AAC champion Tulane, but the Tigers should be the favorite to beat the Gold Eagles in 2027 and 2030. It might be nice for long-time Tiger fans to get a chance to see Memphis be victorious in what used to be a long-time series.
