Let the barbecue wars begin! Memphis will play host to not one, but two (!!), barbecue competitions in May — on the same weekend. The new SmokeSlam BBQ Festival is May 16-18, in Tom Lee Park, and the 46th annual Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest runs May 15-18.

And all of that is happening in time for National Barbecue Day (May 16). So, we’re launching a new newsletter series all about the ’cue.

Over four weeks, you’ll get festival previews for both SmokeSlam and the WCBCC with tips for attendees, schedules, parking info and a rundown of what to do at both fests when you’re not busy stuffing your face.

We’ll also send you barbecue recipes you can make at home, interviews with barbecue judges and experts and we’ll have the tea on the winners of both contests.
