From Brittney Boyd Bullock’s “Loose Ends.” (Courtesy Sheet Cake)
“Loose Ends” includes Brittney Boyd Bullock’s textile works and collage, and explores Black labor, migration and cultural identity. It’s specifically informed by the artist’s family’s migration from Tunica, Mississippi, to Memphis and Chicago. In an artist statement, Boyd Bullock says, “By employing a range of fibers beyond cotton — such as linen, wool, and synthetic materials — I invoke the broader spectrum of labor and craft within the African diaspora.” Read more about the show in our December arts guide. As an added bonus, Sheet Cake is celebrating its first birthday. In addition to Boyd Bullock’s solo exhibition, it’ll simultaneously host a group exhibition, “Back for Seconds,” featuring Roger Allan Cleaves, Melissa Dunn, Stephanie Howard and Clare Torina. Opening reception is from 5-7:30 p.m. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays. Whether you’re in the core city or out in the ’burbs, there’s a parade to choose from this weekend. The parade begins at the corner of Kimbrough Road and Farmington Boulevard, proceeds west on Farmington Boulevard to Exeter Road, turns north on Exeter Road and ends at Germantown Athletic Club. 2 p.m. Sunday. Free. Click here for more. — Phillips
Time Warp Drive-In’s ‘Holly Jolly Holiday Horror’ at Malco’s Summer Drive-In, Saturday:
The Time Warp Drive-in will screen holiday horror films on Saturday, Dec. 14. (Mark Weber/The Daily Memphian file)
Hey, the “Christmas spirit” means different things to different people. Some might want to sip hot chocolate while chestnuts roast on an open fire. Others might want to scarf popcorn while watching a robotic department-store Santa Claus embark on a killing spree. Tomay-to, tomah-to, y’know? That’s apparently the premise of “Christmas Bloody Christmas,” the low-budget (one presumes) 2022 feature that will lead off this month’s seasonal edition of the Time Warp Drive-In. The second half of the double-bill: 2010’s “Troll Hunter,” whose title, one imagines, is a reliable indicator. Screenings begin at 7 p.m. $25 per car. See here for more info. — Chris Herrington
Beale Street Monster Club: Jolly Old Saint Zilla Holiday Celebration at A. Schwab, Sunday:
The Beale Street Monster Club for fans of classic monster-themed horror is hosting a Godzilla-themed holiday party. Enjoy a screening of a Godzilla-themed film voted on by Monster Club members. The instrumental tracks are the perfect high-energy background sounds for your shindig. 8 p.m. $52-$199. 255 N. Main St. Click here for tickets. — Phillips
