Welcome back to The To-Do List, where Daily Memphian staffers suggest their favorite events and activities for the coming week. 

This week, the Memphis Farmers Market pops up, a Guinean-inspired circus stops at GPAC and a Pink Palace exhibit shows why Earth matters.

‘Black Odyssey’ at Hattiloo Theatre, ongoing:

Hattiloo Theatre presents a reimagining of Homer’s epic, “The Odyssey.” This retelling blends mythology and Black history as a soldier, Ulysses Lincoln, makes his way home from the Iraq War to Harlem. The play, written by Yale professor Marcus Gardley, stars Bertram Williams Jr., who is best known for his role as Woddy on the Starz show “P-Valley” (created by Memphis native Katori Hall). “Black Odyssey” is co-directed by Ekundayo Bandele, Hattiloo’s founder and CEO, and Maya Robinson. Sweet Honey In The Rock at the Halloran Centre for the Performing Arts, Friday:

Currently composed of members Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson, Nitanju Bolade Casel and Aisha Kahlil, Sweet Honey In The Rock is an all-female, a cappella vocal ensemble. Romeir Mendez serves as the featured musician, playing upright acoustic bass and electric bass. The music collective has been in existence for more than five decades and is three-time Grammy nominated. Bernice Johnson Reagon founded the group in 1973 in Washington, D.C. Since its founding, the group has had more than 20 members and has recorded about 30 albums. The show includes sign-language interpretation. Doors at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $57. 203 S. Cirque Kalabanté at Germantown Performing Arts Center, Friday:

Circus performer and singer Yamoussa Bangoura’s “Cirque Kalabanté: Afrique en Cirque” is inspired by Guinean life. The show includes acrobats performing to the sounds of Afro-jazz, percussion and kora (a string instrument used in West Africa). Bangoura was part of Circus Baobab, Cirque Éloize, Cavalia, and Cirque du Soleil, before opening his company Kalabanté Productions, in Montreal in 2007. 8-9:30 p.m. $23-$87. 1801 Exeter Road, Germantown. — Perry

‘Earth Matters: Rethink the Future’ at the Pink Palace Museum & Mansion, opening Saturday:

This new exhibit at the Pink Palace teaches kids (and adults) about Earth’s complex challenges on a warming planet and sends them home with ideas on how to make small changes in their own backyards. It covers endangered species, carbon emissions, biodiversity issues, coral reef degradation and more, and it’s on view through May 18. Lunar New Year Celebration at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Saturday:

The Year of the Snake begins on Wednesday, Jan. 29, but the Brooks Museum is starting the party early with a day-long celebration on Saturday. Guests of all ages can make Lunar New Year art, sample dim sum and tea and watch live performances, including a Chinese fan dance and a show by the Sacred Heart Lion Dancers. 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Free with registration. 1934 Poplar Ave. — Phillips

Cordelia’s Market First Responders Chili Cook-Off at Cordelia’s Market, Saturday:

If you work for local law enforcement, as a paramedic or firefighter or serve in the U.S. Coast Guard, Miss Cordelia’s wants to give you a free bowl of chili with all the fixings. Celebrate Scottish poet Robert Burns’ birthday with haggis, bagpipes and whiskey. If you don’t know what haggis is, well, you’re probably better off not knowing. (Just know it’s definitely not vegan.) Guests will be handed a whiskey cocktail when they enter, and there’s a reciting of Burns’ “Address to a Haggis” before three-course dinner of cock-a-leekie soup (that’s a Scottish leek and chicken stock soup), lamb haggis and cranachan (a traditional dessert made with cream and raspberries). Steve Martin and Martin Short show go together like salt and pepper. Or mac and cheese. Or cops and doughnuts. Or Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The list could go on. The two Martins met on the set of 1986’s “Three Amigos” and have been inseparable ever since. “Swamp-soul” singer and longtime Memphian Marcella Simien leads the band Marcella and Her Lovers, which fuses her Creole heritage with the Memphis sound. In 2024, she released her debut solo album, playing every instrument on the record, except for on one collaboration with DJ Michael “Qemist” Ivy. Talibah Safiya is a native Memphian rooted in the Orange Mound and South Memphis communities. With songs spanning blues, jazz, hip-hop and R&B, Safiya has released several singles and a live album called “Love Spells” in 2023. Her 2024 album — “Black Magic” — features Simien. Alongside video artistry from Graham Burks Jr. (performing as Infinity Stairs), the concert offers the chance to see two of Memphis’ most compelling and evolving stars of today. 7 p.m. doors, 7:30 p.m. show. The Hood Rave at 616 Music Complex, Saturday:

Serving as an after party to the Talibah Safiya and Marcella Simien concert, the Hood Rave dance party returns after a two-year hiatus. Hosted by Safiya, Amari Mouna Arnett and Maarifa Arnett, the event will feature DJs spinning house, Afrobeats, hip-hop and Amapiano. This iteration will feature DJs Chief Rifa, YoBreezye, Nico and Bizzle Bluebland. 10 p.m. $15 advance, $20 door (tickets here). 616 Marshall Ave. — Perry

The Memphis Tigers men’s basketball team is playing a serious game of ball against UAB at FedExForum Monday night. So, you could go out and support the home team, but you might be biting your nails before it’s all over. Why not take a break from real sports and head to Southaven? That’s where the Harlem Globetrotters will no doubt be spinning basketballs on their fingers and slamming dunks into the net.
