In the mid-1990s, Jeff Buckley’s charisma and dynamic vocal presence made music industry executives, fellow artists and fans alike see stars, or, more to the point, see the potential for a star. A California native who launched his career in New York’s East Village, Buckley died of an accidental drowning in Memphis’ Wolf River Harbor in May, 1997, at age 30, in a city where he’d only recently relocated to find some peace and work on new music. “It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley,” a new feature-length documentary on Buckley’s life and music, will be begin a full run at Ridgeway Cinema Grill on Friday, and Friday night’s 7 p.m. screening will feature a post-screening Q&A with Memphis writers Robert Gordon and Andria Lisle, along with documentary editor Stacy Goldate. Read more about the movie hereAdvance tickets are available via Malco’s web site and mobile app. — Chris Herrington

Bar Lumpia at Bar Limina, Friday-Saturday:

Bar Limina will host a Filipino food pop-up Friday-Saturday, Aug. 8-9. (Patrick Lantrip/The Daily Memphian file)

I just finished “Arsenic and Adobo,” a cozy kitchen mystery by Mia P. Manansala. The murder mystery is set in a Filipino restaurant in the fictional town of Shady Palms, Illinois. Throughout the book, Manansala goes in-depth about Filipino foods, like lumpia (spring rolls) and pandesal (bread rolls). So, I was thrilled to see some of those foods will be available at Bar Limina this weekend, thanks to a two-day residency by guest-chef Sean Smith. Smith is the son of a Filipino mother and a dad from Mississippi, who both instilled in him “a deep love for food as both comfort and culture.” Yes, there will be lumpia (with squash marmalade and yuzu tomato jam), plus other traditional foods, like kakanin with coconut jam. Stop by for a taste of the Philippines, and if you want more, take my book rec. (It has recipes!). 4-10 p.m. 631 Madison Ave. — Phillips

Recess Reloaded will take place near the Memphis sign on Mud Island River Park. (Brandon Dill/Special to The Daily Memphian file)
