‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ at the Orpheum, Monday:
Perhaps you’ve heard of it. “It’s a Wonderful Life” has a reputation as America’s Christmas movie, and its holiday finale still hits with an intensity of feeling that is undiminished nearly 80 years later. But intensity ripples through this outright American masterpiece, in a charming loopiness too-mistaken for corniness, in the plunging depths of despair and regret it’s willing to contemplate, with the understanding that a Bedford Falls is always in danger of becoming a Pottersville. This screening is a benefit for the Porter-Leath toy drive, with a preshow concert and an introduction by Mary Owen, the daughter of movie co-star Donna Reed. 7 p.m. Admission is free for two with a new, unwrapped toy donation for pre-school ages, or $10 at the door without a toy donation. See here for more info. — Herrington
