What’s closed? Schools, weather information, warming centers and more

This article includes information about city services, warming centers, parks and library closures, school closures and other weather information for Memphis and the Mid-South. It will be updated regularly.

Schools

Memphis-Shelby County Schools campuses will remain closed to students and staff Tuesday, Jan. 27, the district announced. After-school activities and other events are cancelled. Charter schools in Shelby County make their own decisions about school closures.

Public schools in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown and Lakeland will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Millington will remain closed Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 27 and 28, Superintendent Bo Griffin said.

DeSoto County Schools will be closed Monday, Jan. 26, Tuesday, Jan. 27 and Wednesday, Jan 28, due to road conditions, said Lauren Margeson, executive administrative assistant to Superintendent Cory Uselton. 

All University of Memphis locations will remain in modified campus operations — including remote classes and work for students, faculty and staff — on Tuesday, Jan. 27. Activities and events at all University of Memphis locations are canceled or postponed.

The Christian Brothers University campus will remain closed through Wednesday, Jan. 28. Students and employees will operate remotely, and all day and evening classes will be held virtually. On-campus events scheduled for these days are postponed.

University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s Memphis campus will extend the suspension of on-campus operations through at least 6 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Rhodes College will be closed through Tuesday, Jan. 27, due to the impending winter storm. The college will shift to remote work for staff.

Southwest Tennessee Community College will continue with virtual classes/remote learning and work on Tuesday, Jan. 27. All campus locations will be closed.

Southern College of Optometry’s campus will be closed through Wednesday, Jan. 28. This includes its two clinics: The Eye Center on the main campus at 1225 Madison Ave. and The FocalPoint at Crosstown Concourse. 

Catholic Diocese of Memphis Schools will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 27. The Diocese’s Catholic Center Office (Chancery) will also be closed.

MPD inclement-weather policy

The Memphis Police Department is still under its inclement-weather policy, meaning it will not respond to every reported car accident. 

If there are no injuries or alcohol or drugs involved, drivers should exchange information and arrange a time to meet at the nearest police station or the department’s traffic division at 3430 Austin Peay Highway.

Drivers should bring their vehicle, proof of insurance and registration to file the report within ten working days.

Warming centers

Memphis

The City of Memphis is partnering with the Hospitality Hub to operate a warming center at First Baptist Church, 200 East Parkway N.

Transportation to the warming center can be arranged by calling 901-486-0939 during operating hours.

For others needing shelter, the following Community Centers are operating warming centers:

  • Frayser – Raleigh Senior Center: 3985 Egypt Central Road
  • Bert Ferguson CC: 8505 Trinity Road
  • Gaisman: 4221 Macon Road
  • Gaston: 1048 S. Third St.

24-hour locations*:

  • Ed Rice: 2935 N. Watkins St.
  • Orange Mound CC: 2572 Park Ave.
  • Hickory Hill CC: 3910 Ridgeway Road

*Pets are accepted only at 24-hour locations.

Collierville

Collierville Public Works transfer station will be closed. Residents are also reminded that the former landfill area, often referred to as “Mount Trashmore,” is a state-monitored construction site and remains off-limits to the public for sledding or any other activities.

North Mississippi

In Southaven, the Community Safe Room at 7312 U.S. 51 N. opened at noon Friday. The City of Hernando opened the Gale Center at 2601 Elm St. at 5 p.m. Friday.

Olive Branch

The City of Olive Branch confirmed their warming center locations and times, updating residents on preparations for the winter weather.

The city announced the Community Storm Shelter will serve as a warming center. The shelter is located on the campus of Olive Branch Elementary at 9549 Pigeon Roost Road.

Additionally, the city stated Ash’s Irish Pub, located at 9200 Goodman Road, suite 300, will be open to the community as needed.

Libraries, parks and museums

Libraries

Memphis officials announced Saturday, Jan. 24, that Memphis Public Libraries would begin operating under an inclement weather policy: seven locations will be open:

  • Benjamin L Hooks Central Library*: 3030 Poplar Ave.
  • Whitehaven Branch: 4120 Millbranch Road
  • Raleigh Branch: 3452 Austin Peay Highway
  • Cordova Branch: 8457 Trinity Road
  • Parkway Village Branch: 4655 Knight Arnold Road
  • Crenshaw Branch: 531 Vance Ave.
  • Frayser Branch: 2220 James Road

*Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library is the only branch open Sunday from 1-4 p.m.

Museums

The National Civil Rights Museum will be closed through Tuesday, Jan. 27. It will reopen on Jan. 28.

Parks

Due to inclement weather, all Memphis Parks activities are canceled for Monday, Jan. 26.

In Collierville, the Collierville Burch Library and the Collierville Community Center & Fitness Center are closed.

While all programming is called off this weekend, the Overton Park Shell invites the community to slide down “the best sledding slope in town.” They do ask all sledders to stay off the stage and stairs, exercise precaution on the “slope” and surrounding areas where ice accumulates, and to haul all makeshift sledding materials away.

Transportation

The Memphis Area Transit Authority has suspended operations and all the bus system’s transit centers are closed.

MATA will operate MATAPlus paratransit service only starting at 5 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, for medical and dialysis patients.

Riders should confirm that their clinics are open. If your clinic is closed, please cancel your ride request to help keep service available for those with critical needs.

People experiencing homelessness who need a ride to the Hospitality Hub should call 901-486-0939.

Government

City of Memphis

The Memphis City Council will meet virtually on Tuesday, Jan. 27. The council sent a notice Sunday that said the change was necessary to protect the health and safety of citizens and employees.

Shelby County courts

The Shelby County Circuit Court, Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, Chancery Court, General Sessions Criminal, Probate Court and Civil Court will be closed Monday and Tuesday. That includes the General Sessions Court Clerk’s Office. However, the clerk’s 24-hour bail office will remain open.

Shelby County Juvenile Court

The Shelby County Juvenile Court will be closed Monday and Tuesday. All dockets are canceled except for the following which will be held virtually:

  • Preliminary hearings at 9 a.m.
  • Detention/in-custody delinquency hearings at 1 p.m.
  • Dependency and neglect all day
  • Custody and visitation all day

Staff will work remotely, and if family can’t attend a hearing virtually, it will be reset to the next available docket date.

Shelby County Assessor of Property

The Shelby County Assessor of Property’s on site in-person operations at 1075 Mullins Station Road and 157 Washington Ave. will be closed on Monday, Jan. 26.

Bartlett

The Cityy of Bartlett’s offices will be closed Tuesday, Jan. 27, along with all previously scheduled programs, meetings and events. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting and work session scheduled for Tuesday have been moved to Thursday, Jan. 29, with the work session at 5 p.m. and the regular meeting at 6 p.m.

Collierville

Collierville facilities will remain closed Tuesday, Jan. 27.

“This decision has been made to prioritize the safety of residents and Town employees,” Jennifer Preston, Collierville public information officer, said in an email.

The Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting scheduled for Monday evening has been moved to Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 3 p.m., town officials announced Sunday morning.

Collierville Schools Board of Education will not have its monthly meeting Tuesday. The announcement came Sunday as wintry precipitation dwindled but frigid temperatures remained. All items will roll to the agenda for the Tuesday, Feb. 24, meeting.

DeSoto County

DeSoto County Justice Court judges have canceled court sessions scheduled through Tuesday, Jan. 27. Those who were scheduled to appear in Justice Court on these dates are advised to contact the Justice Court Clerk’s Office for a new court date. Citations or official court documents will have the contact information. The county stated that no decisions have been made regarding closures for other county offices.

Christie Barclay, DeSoto County community resource director, announced the closure of county offices, courts, the DeSoto County Animal Shelter and the Agri-Education Center through Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Germantown

Germantown has canceled its Industrial Development Board meeting scheduled for Thursday. The vote on tax increment financing for The Standard, a mixed-use development for the southwestern corner of Kirby Parkway and Poplar Avenue, will be rescheduled.

These facilities are closed: the Great Hall & Conference Center, the Germantown Community Library, the Germantown Performing Arts Center and the Germantown Athletic Club.

The Germantown Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting scheduled for Monday, Jan. 26 is canceled. All items will be moved to the Feb. 9 agenda.

Germantown’s Design Review Commission meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 27 has been canceled.

City facilities will remain closed Tuesday.

Sanitation collection for the Friday route did not occur due to inclement weather and landfill closure. Sanitation will not be collected Monday for Germantown customers. Their next collection date is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 2, weather permitting.

Animal shelters

Collierville Animal Shelter is closed for public visits and adoptions, but internal care for animals will proceed.

Memphis Animal Services is intent is to operate at full service. However, depending on the weather conditions they may reduce operating hours and locations. See website and social media for latest updates.

MAS stated in a news conference Sunday, Jan. 25, that outside shelters and dog houses are insufficient in the low temperatures the area is experiencing. Pets should be kept indoors. 

Cancellations

The Shelby County Board of Commissioners has called off its Monday, Jan. 26 meeting. It has been rescheduled for Feb. 2.

Germantown Municipal School District will reschedule its Board of Education meeting planned for Tuesday. The district had not selected a new date as of Monday afternoon.

City of Bartlett residents can find up to date information on the city’s social media sites or at their neighborhood information hub.

Collierville residents can find updates on the town’s website where they can also sign up for phone or email alerts. 

Information about Germantown closures can be found through Germantown Alert. Updates will also be posted on the City’s website and official social media channels as conditions change. 

Lakeland residents can receive weather and safety updates by call, email, text and more with the City’s Mass Notification System. 

Millington residents can find updates on the city’s social media sites and the city website and may sign up for alerts here.
