Morning, Memphis. It’s Thursday, April 2 — National Burrito Day! That means you can find deals on wrapped meals at several national burrito chains.
Or, you can support local and try the Karen’s Maple Delight breakfast burrito at Mitchell’s or the carnitas burrito at El Palenke. If you want my rec though, try the vegan Kind Burrito at City Silo. Alright, let’s roll on into the news, shall we?
THE NEED TO KNOW

BC arrested: Memphis Grizzlies center Brandon Clarke wasn’t on the sidelines at last night’s game. Instead, he spent the night in an Arkansas jail. Clarke was arrested Wednesday in Cross County, Arkansas, for trafficking a controlled substance and fleeing in a speeding vehicle. He’s being held in the Cross County jail, about an hour from Memphis, until his bail hearing. (Imagine sharing a small-town jail cell with BC!) Former Grizzly Tony Allen was charged with drug possession in Arkansas just a few months ago. (Maybe stay out of Arkansas, y’all.) In other Grizz news, the team lost to the New York Knicks last night, which was a win for NBA draft positioning.

Waste and abuse: The interim forensic audit report of Memphis-Shelby County Schools revealed nearly 200 deficiencies. Among them were poor record-keeping and a little more than $1 million in contract-related “waste or abuse.” On the bright side, auditors found no fraud or abuse issues with how MSCS handled federal pandemic relief funding. See more of what was in the report here. But keep in mind this is not anywhere near the full picture: The state comptroller’s office is only about a quarter of the way done with the audit, and the Wednesday release was just a look at what’s been uncovered so far. The final report is expected this summer and could further ignite state takeover efforts.
Rapper’s family home raided: A Cordova home connected to Memphis rapper Pooh Shiesty was raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday. It’s not clear if the home belonged to Pooh or his dad, who share the same name. (Real name: Lontrell Williams, not Pooh.) Pooh Shiesty was recently released from federal prison for his role in a robbery and shooting in Florida.
Wanda Halbert is term-limited from seeking a third consecutive term as Shelby County clerk, but she is running for Shelby County Criminal Court clerk. (Patrick Lantrip/The Daily Memphian file)
Halbert ouster back on: The Tennessee Supreme Court has denied Shelby County Clerk Wanda Halbert’s appeal of her ouster attempt, meaning the effort is back on five months before her term in office ends. The county-led ouster attempt alleged Halbert neglected her office, which has struggled with a car tag backlog and lapsing leases for clerk’s office locations.

“I’ve just built my career on being tough enough to do the work that a lot of people might not want to do at those levels,” Memphis women’s basketball coach Hana Haden said. (Patrick Lantrip/The Daily Memphian)
“I am that dawg, Dr. Scott.”
— Hana Haden, new Memphis Tigers women’s basketball coach That was Haden’s response to Tigers athletic director Ed Scott when he asked her, after a job interview, if she had “that dawg” in her so she could be successful at Memphis. Scott introduced Haden in a presser on Wednesday, where she revealed just how tough she is. Calkins explains why he thinks Haden is “made of the right stuff” to turn the women’s program around.
THE NICE TO KNOW
Taqueria La Guadalupana on Summer Avenue registered as quiet on the SoundPrint app. (The Daily Memphian file)
Can you hear me now? Memphis restaurants are loud. That’s according to a new app called SoundPrint that uses crowdsourced data to measure the decibels in restaurants. The app is still new, but the limited info so far found Memphis eateries registered an average of 77.9 decibels. That’s higher than what’s considered safe for your hearing, according to the Hearing Health Foundation. We’ve got a look at some of the loudest places — and one quiet spot that may not aggravate your ear holes.
Visible Music College will continue leasing space at 200 Madison Ave. and assist the building owner with managing facility rentals for private events in its front lobby. (Patrick Lantrip/The Daily Memphian file)
Visible changes: Visible Music College is leaving Downtown. The religious-based music school will reopen in Millington’s River of Life Church. The school moved into its current mid-century modern building Downtown 15 years ago, after Bank of America moved out. But the school was hit hard by the pandemic, and as founder Ken Steorts said, “it really was too big for us all along.” The digs aren’t all that’s changing: Visible has a new president, too.
Heartsong Church moved into its building on 30 acres at the northeast corner of Houston Levee and Humphrey roads in late 2002. (Andy Ashby/The Daily Memphian)
Holy land sold: Heartsong Church has sold 10 acres of its property to an out-of-town investor. Heartsong sat on about 30 acres at the northeast corner of Houston Levee and Humphrey roads when it moved to Cordova in 2002. Some of that land remained undeveloped, so Heartsong decided to sell a portion. The investor, who apparently has local ties, may not do anything with it for a while.
Memphis Tigers guard Curtis Givens III drove against South Florida Bulls forward Isaiah Jones during a game at FedExForum on March 5. (Wes Hale/Special to The Daily Memphian)
Into the portal: Another Memphis Tiger may be jumping ship. Basketball guard Curtis Givens III is reportedly planning to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Givens is a native Memphian with a locally famous father. He’s the second Tiger to announce portal plans: Wing Ashton Hardaway, who also has a famous dad, intends to enter as well.
WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT
Here’s a round-up of some of the best April Fool’s Day jokes on social media yesterday. Crosstown should really think about adding that slide for real though.

By the way, that pickle cake at Lulu’s Bakery and Cafe was no joke. They released a very real April Fool’s Day menu, so I tried it, and it did not disappoint. 10/10!
