The University of Memphis announced Saturday evening, Jan. 28, in a message to students and staff that it would return to normal operations Sunday, Jan. 29.

“University officials will keep our campus informed should further communications be necessary,” the message said.

Earlier Saturday, the U of M had announced its campus would close “until further notice.”

“As our community continues to try to cope with the events surrounding the death of Tyre Nichols, we share the heartbreak being felt throughout our city,” the earlier statement read.

The statement added students, faculty and staff would still be able to access the campus facilities with their regular credentials. Essential facilities, including the University Center, the library, Tiger Den and all residential halls, remained available to faculty, students and staff.

“University officials are continuing to closely monitor any potential safety concerns that may arise as the safety of our campus community remains our top priority,” the statement read. “Updates on the reopening of the Memphis campuses will be communicated as soon as possible.”

The Saturday closure did not affect the Memphis Tiger women’s basketball game, which was held at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers lost to South Florida 67-62.
