Former tight end Alan Cross joining Norvell's staff

By Published: January 11, 2019 5:58 PM CT

Former Memphis Tiger and NFL tight end Alan Cross has joined head coach Mike Norvell's staff as a graduate assistant.

Cross spent three seasons in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers catching 13 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown. After being cut, waived and moved back and forth from the practice squad in 2017, he appeared in the first 14 games of the 2018 season for the Bucs. A shoulder injury cut his season short and landed him on the injured reserve list, though.

The Tigers initially brought the Millington native on as a walk-on long snapper before moving him to tight end where he made the most of his opportunity. He caught 90 passes for 1,050 yards and 14 touchdowns in four years at Memphis.

Even since graduating from the U of M, Cross has remained around the program. He's been to practices and gotten familiar with Norvell and his coaching staff.

Norvell has made a habit of promoting his graduate assistants. Auburn offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham started as a graduate assistant and worked his way up before moving on to Auburn. Former graduate assistant Tony Tokarz was promoted to tight ends coach this off season.

Barring any unforeseen changes, Norvell's staff is locked down after The Daily Memphian reported he's promoted Kevin Clune to linebackers coach
