The Week in Review

Developers of Topgolf started churning up dirt and clearing trees in and around the old Polo Fields on the east side of South Germantown Road this week and the long-awaited venue is moving closer to reality.

The principles closed on the site just north of Tenn. 385 about this time a week ago. Then the heavy equipment moved onto the property about the time trick-or-treaters were recovering from the rounds on their annual candy cash-in.

I haven’t been to a Topgolf and only know about it from editing Abigail Warren’s stories on the business. And, frankly, after 40 years away from the game, I’m still in knee replacement rehab before I can start swinging a club.

In fact, the doctor told me this week to limit my work to chipping and putting right now. We both agreed that was a good place to start since that always was the main shortfall of my game.

Anyway, while some of the initial site work is underway, we are still a ways off from Topgolf opening on the fields south of Germantown. And, hopefully, there are some improvements to roads in the area. I have to believe those are on the horizon since the stretch from the Germantown city limits south to Winchester is still two lanes most of the way. The widening to the same width as Germantown seemed to be reliant on a development to pay for the work.

You can see where curbs and gutters were built years and years ago in anticipation of the eventual widening.

As far as I can tell, there are no plans for a Topgolf exit directly off the Bill Morris Parkway for easy access to the links destination.- Suburbs editor Clay Bailey
