The Week in Review

Over the course of a rough week for the city of Memphis, the sports world kept spinning — a small respite from the reality of challenging times.

The Memphis Grizzlies returned home from a miserable winless five-game road trip that ended with a loss Friday night at Minnesota, then snapped their losing skid with Sunday night’s 112-100 win over Indiana at FedExForum.

The victory, however, was overshadowed by ongoing news stemming from the Tyre Nichols tragedy, prompting coach Taylor Jenkins and multiple Grizzlies players, including Ja Morant, to speak out on the Memphis man’s death and its fallout, which has been mostly peaceful protests around town and five fired Memphis Police Department officers facing criminal charges including second-degree murder.

So while Grizzlies beat writer Drew Hill provided the basketball coverage Sunday, columnist Geoff Calkins penned a powerful piece that has many around a grieving city trying, as he wrote, “to figure out what comes next.”

Meanwhile, the week took Tigers basketball beat writer Parth Upadhyaya to Tulsa for Sunday’s win over the Golden Hurricane and had Memphis coach Penny Hardaway saying these telling words after last Thursday night’s victory over SMU: “We’re well aware of how our city needs to heal and grow.”

Here are some highlights from The Daily Memphian sports staff’s week of work. — Deputy sports editor Tim Buckley
