The Week in Review

More people were fired this week as the investigations into Tyre Nichols’ beating death continued. Three Memphis firefighters were ousted, two of whom also had their EMT licenses suspected by the Tennessee Emergency Medical Services Board, and Preston Hemphill became the sixth MPD officer fired for his involvement. The funeral for Nichols, which counted Vice President Kamala Harris among the many notable attendees, was held this week. And Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland announced that MPD will undergo a review by the U.S. Justice Department and International Association of Police Chiefs.

A Memphis Police officer was shot Thursday, Feb. 2, when a suspect opened fire in an East Memphis library branch. The suspect, who was shot by another officer, died on the scene. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has not provided an update on the wounded officer’s condition since saying he was “extremely critical” on Thursday.

Also, The Daily Memphian published a three-part package looking at local law enforcement agencies’ pursuit policies; the Memphis Zoo lost ‘easygoing, playful’ giant panda Le Le; and the Memphis City Council’s private attorney warned of legal issues related to a reportedly private meeting of the council’s redistricting committee.
