The Week in Review

Wanda Halbert was back in the news this week with word of a deadline from Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris. On Wednesday, Harris told the Shelby County Clerk she had until Friday to formulate a plan for relocating the Poplar Plaza satellite office or he could make the case that she is derelict in her duty. Late on the afternoon of the imposed deadline, Halbert fired back at Harris, asserting her independence and saying that she was working to open an additional, separate satellite location at Quince and Perkins roads. Halbert goes before Shelby County commissioners during Wednesday, March 29, committee sessions to talk about the controversy.

Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy said Monday, March 27, his office would seek the death penalty in its prosecution of Ezekiel Kelly, who is accused of carrying out a shooting spree on Sept. 7, 2022, that left three people dead and three others injured. During the announcement, Mulroy acknowledged that some may have wondered if he would take that action. “But when the case isn’t close, when the facts are sufficiently clear, either one way or another, then a district attorney acting in good faith sometimes has to come to the conclusion that the facts and circumstances compelled a particular decision,” he said.

And a trio of stories from The Daily Memphian reporter Jane Roberts especially caught readers’ eyes this week: a “now what?” analysis about Oak Court Mall’s future; a look at the historic Annesdale Mansion’s upcoming auction; and a story about the stinky seaweed blob that has plenty of people, including travel agents, talking.
