The Memphis medical community is mourning the loss of Dr. Ben Mauck, a Campbell Clinic surgeon who specialized in hand, wrist, shoulder and pediatric surgery who was fatally shot Tuesday, July 11, in an exam room at the practice’s Collierville office. Larry Pickens, 29, is charged in the shooting; he was arraigned Thursday on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault. Pickens had his bail set at $1.2 million bail and is scheduled to appear in Collierville court again on Thursday.

A civil lawsuit against Ja Morant over an incident at his parents’ home is paused until the courts decide whether portions of a state law are constitutional. Attorneys for the state of Tennessee and teenage basketball player Joshua Holloway will make their arguments during an Oct. 12 hearing. Check out The Daily Memphian’s explainer on the charges and what they mean for Morant.

A woman accused of theft after a former Memphis Police Department officer was found dead July 9 had her $100,000 bond reaffirmed in a hearing before General Sessions Criminal Court Division 11 Judge Karen Massey. “This is the most cold-blooded thing I have ever seen sitting on this bench,” Massey said during the hearing.

The latest campaign filings in the Memphis mayoral race show candidate Paul Young has the most money in his coffers, with a balance of about $597,000. The contender with the second-most cash on hand is Floyd Bonner Jr., with about $534,000. The filings also detailed campaign spending patterns of the candidates, none of whom have started advertising on TV just yet.
