The Week in Prep Sports

This week’s girls soccer match between Houston and Briarcrest had a state-tournament feel to it. And both teams hope it will help them actually get there.

Both teams were runner-up in their respective divisions in 2022, Houston in Class AAA and Briarcrest in D2-AA. The Mustangs got big production from a couple of freshmen in a 3-1 victory that had both coaches extolling the virtues of their opponent — and the benefits of playing the best competition available with the playoffs approaching.

And speaking of competition, Fairley will get a strong test as it heads to Northpoint for a non-region football game. Through four games, the state-ranked Bulldogs are undefeated and have yet to allow a point.

Football, soccer and everything else — we need your help in spotlighting our area’s best prep athletes. Coaches and stat-keepers can send in their scores, highlights and top performers from each game either by emailing john.varlas@gmail.com or via X, formerly known as Twitter, @johnvarlas.
