The Week in Prep Sports

Instead of transitioning, Mitchell football is thriving. The Tigers, who compete in Region 8-2A, are off to an undefeated start behind a first-year coach. Larry Fitzgerald, a former assistant, replaced Mitchell legend Nathan Cole ahead of this season and he’s bringing a youthful and new voice to the program — while being helped by a staff of former Mitchell players like himself.Mitchell has its sights firmly set on the playoffs but those are still a few weeks away. Golf’s postseason is here, though, and Sujay Mukatira of MUS was the surprise winner in a tightly contested region tournament. And, as always, we need your help in spotlighting our area’s best athletes. Coaches and stat-keepers can send in their scores, highlights and top performers from each game either by email at jvarlas@dailymemphian.com or on X, formerly known as Twitter, at @johnvarlas.
