Derrick Rose, current Memphis Grizzlies point guard. Derrick Rose, former Memphis Tigers point guard. Derrick Rose — art connoisseur?

Correct.

Grizzlies beat writer Drew Hill brought us another side the former NBA MVP with an insightful story on a shared love for art, something that took a twist when former Tigers and Grizzlies point Elliot Perry welcomed Rose into his home and began mentoring the avid fellow collector.

It was one of the highlights of The Daily Memphian sports staff’s work over the past week and a welcome respite from the Grizzlies’ 0-4 start to the 2023-24 season.

Speaking of point guards, Tigers beat writer Parth Upadhyaya caught up with former University of Memphis star Andre Turner — fondly known as The Little General — before Sunday’s exhibition game against an outmatched Lane College team coached by Turner.

Upadhyaya later delivered all you need to know after the Tigers’ blowout win in the first of their two exhibition games before Monday night’s opener, Nov. 6, against Jackson State (the other comes Thursday night at FedExForum against LeMoyne-Owen), while columnist Chris Herrington broke down what’s next for the injury-hampered Grizzlies, whose depth issues — especially when it comes to bench scoring — have been exposed amid a futility streak that included Monday night’s home loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

Tigers football beat writer Frank Bonner II, meanwhile, headed down to Denton, Texas, last weekend to report on Memphis’ American Athletic Conference win over North Texas. It was a game coach Ryan Silverfield’s club initially looked like it was going to easily win, then almost lost before finally pulling out a three-point win behind receiver Joseph Scates late redemptive touchdown catch off a throw from Denton native Seth Henigan.

Columnist John Martin later opined on the bowl-eligible Tigers’ win.

Over in the preps world, high school sports writer John Varlas recapped a big Friday night football slate of games that included Houston High’s win at Collierville. Varlas also reported on the all-Memphis state soccer championship match between ECS and St. George’s, making him the only local media member to cover the high school state golf, volleyball and soccer tournaments.
