The Week in Prep Sports

The fourth-fastest man in history will be part of Tennessee’s largest regular-season track meet.

Saturday at Houston, Olympic gold-medal winner Asafa Powell will be on hand at the Houston Track Classic to pose for pictures and sign autographs from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Jamaican’s top time in the 100 meter dash is 9.77 seconds, a mark surpassed by only three others.

There will also be plenty of elite high-school talent, too, from Memphis and the surrounding region. The Classic began with eight teams in 2009 and this year will host well north of 50 schools and 1,000 athletes.

Track takes center stage this weekend. But as always, we want to shine the spotlight on all of our top athletes. Coaches and stat-keepers can send in their scores, highlights and top performers from each game either by emailing jvarlas@dailymemphian.com or on X, formerly known as Twitter, @johnvarlas.
