At The Daily Memphian, we primarily focus on Memphis-based sports teams, but if you have not already read Drew Hill’s feature on Mississippi State QB Jake Weir, then please make the time to read about Weir and his connection with Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital. Weir shared his story last week at the Memphis Touchdown Club’s meeting. Speaking of the Touchdown Club. Former Ole Miss and Arkansas head football coach Houston Nutt talked with our Frank Bonner II at Monday’s meeting and shared his thoughts on the transfer portal and NIL payments. Bonner was also busy last week writing about the newest additions to the Tigers football team via the transfer portal and how the team is trying to avoid getting caught up in all the hype regarding the 2024 season. Tigers basketball writer Parth Upadhyaya was also writing about players coming and going via the transfer portal, and he was able to talk with interim U of M athletic director Jeff Crane, who would like to remain in Memphis and become the AD. Preps writer John Varlas covered some high school post-season events, 901 FC soccer, wrote a nice feature on TRA softball and wrote a couple stories regarding issues involving race and ”white privilege“ at Collierville High School.
