David Jones’ decision to keep his name in the 2024 NBA Draft pool was a hot topic in Memphis last week, so The Daily Memphian’s sports staff tackled the development from multiple angles. Parth Upadhyaya was up late Wednesday reporting the news as Jones’ decision remained uncertain deep into the night. John Martin examined what the choice meant for both Jones and the Memphis Tigers going forward, Tim Buckley weighed in with his take on why Memphis fans shouldn’t be too broken up, and Upadhyaya broke down options to fill the void left by the departure of the Tigers’ top scorer from a season ago. Meanwhile, Upadhyaya reported on what Tigers basketball coach Penny Hardaway had to say — and what he wouldn’t say — about Jones and other offseason matters before teeing it up Monday at an AutoZone Liberty Bowl golf tournament. Upadhyaya also caught up with Tigers football coach Ryan Silverfield both before the golf tournament and at a gathering of Tigers supporters last Thursday night — photo intern Benjamin Nayor took plenty of pictures at the event — and Drew Hill profiled Liberty Bowl distinguished citizen honoree Joe Theismann. Hill also examined how the Grizzlies’ offense might look next season, Chris Herrington looked ahead as the franchise continues its preparation for the NBA’s June 26-27 draft with his lengthy piece on options for the No. 9 pick, Frank Bonner II covered the final game of the Memphis Showboats’ 2024 UFL season Sunday, Buckley wrote about what the Showboats’ top marketing man had to say about the team’s future in Memphis, and John Varlas started his series of postseason high school spring sports awards. Here’s a look at some of the staff’s top work from the week: — Deputy sports editor Tim Buckley
