A West Tennessee Republican district attorney, who’s been notably vocal in his support of Democratic Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy, said last week that problems in the bail bonds industry are contributing to problems within the criminal justice system. Frederick Agee, district attorney for Tennessee’s 28th judicial district that covers Haywood, Crockett and Gibson counties, said defendants often pay very low bond percentages to secure their release from jail, undermining the intentions of local judges who set bail amounts but aren’t privy to what a defendant actually pays a bonding company.

XAI plans to build a greywater plant near its Southwest Memphis supercomputer and could sell the plant, once complete, to the city. In other xAI news, Memphis residents and environmental activists voiced concerns about the project during an MLGW-hosted community meeting Saturday. The Daily Memphian also reported last week that xAI’s turbines don’t have an air emissions permit, according to the Shelby County Health Department.

Last week marked the first day of school for most Shelby County kids, but at 12 Memphis-Shelby County Schools, the first day was cut short over issues with air conditioning. Additionally, the district also began the 2024-25 school year 478 employees short, according to data obtained by The Daily Memphian.

And the City of Memphis has hired PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP to perform a forensic audit of the Memphis Area Transit Authority, a step that follows years of worsening financials for the transit operator.
