Memphis-Shelby County Schools Superintendent Marie Feagins sent a district-wide email in June announcing the job cuts. Her plan at the time generated both outrage and applause. But how did those cuts change the MSCS workforce? The Daily Memphian’s Laura Testino analyzed public records to determine what Memphis school district jobs were cut and which ones were created for this 2024-25 school year. She found that the district had a negligible change from historical staffing levels, despite all the shake-ups. The federal trial for the former Memphis Police Department officers accused in the January 2023 beating death of Tyre Nichols started today. In his opening remarks, U.S. District Judge Mark Norris, who is presiding over the case, highlighted the weightiness of the proceedings to come. He quoted Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, saying jury trials are a foundation of the American government and “the heart and lungs of liberty.” The Daily Memphian will bring updates to readers throughout the entire trial, which is expected to last three to four weeks. Also, the Shelby County Health Department confirmed last week that it had received funding and approval from the Environmental Protection Agency to reinstate a long-gone air monitoring station in South Memphis, in the same ZIP code as xAI’s Memphis Supercomputer; murders are down 21% in Memphis so far in 2024 compared to the same point last year; and a new report shows that rearrest rates went up slightly after the implementation of the Standing Bail Order. — Metro editor Jane Donahoe
