Upheaval in the Memphis Tigers’ basketball program was the talk of the town last week, providing plenty of opportunity for The Daily Memphian sports staff to stay busy. Parth Upadhyaya covered the news of four of coach Penny Hardaway’s staff members being dismissed in an oddly timed September housecleaning and of the Tigers acknowledging they had given to the NCAA an anonymous letter alleging multiple rules violations. Geoff Calkins weighed in on the developments, and Tim Buckley tried to break down what it all means. The basketball situation took some of the spotlight away from Memphis’ now nationally ranked football program, which, after beating Troy on Saturday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, is now No. 25 in the Coaches Poll as it prepares to visit Florida State on Saturday morning in Tallahassee. Frank Bonner II wrote a terrific pregame piece on running back/decathlete Greg Desrosiers, who will take on a bigger roll now that Sutton Smith is out for the season due to injury. Buckley wrote about the football team’s sagging ticket sales and the program’s on-the-rise fundraising efforts after athletic director Ed Scott brought up both at a University of Memphis Board of Trustees meeting. On the NBA front, Drew Hill delivered a super-insightful piece on how the Memphis Grizzlies might look with Ja Morant back in the fold. And on the high school football front, John Varlas was on hand to produce a wonderfully written game story as Houston managed to knock off Germantown in a wild one that went to the wire. Here’s a look at some of the staff’s top work from the week: — Deputy sports editor Tim Buckley
