What a wild, weird week it was for the Memphis Tigers, and The Daily Memphian sports staff had all the wackiness covered. The reshaped Pac-12 went after Memphis, but the Tigers — after much debate — ultimately decided to remain in the American Athletic Conference. Geoff Calkins, Frank Bonner II, Parth Upadhyaya and I wrote before, during and after the rollercoaster ride with more bound to come on Memphis’ place in the conference realignment picture in the days and weeks ago. Bonner made the trip to Annapolis, Maryland, for the Tigers’ ill-timed loss last Saturday at Navy, one that knocked previously No. 23 Memphis out of the Coaches Poll. He and I will be back at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium this coming Saturday night when Middle Tennessee is in town for the final nonconference game of the season as Coach Ryan Silverfield’s team tries to shake its mess with the Midshipmen. Before the Navy game, Bonner wrote a fun feature on a Tigers offensive lineman nicknamed Snack — enough said there — and afterward, John Martin broke down the loss. In the Memphis Grizzlies’ world, Sam Hardiman from the news side, and Calkins addressed FedExForum-area safety issues while Upadhyaya caught up with star guard Ja Morant at a Meals for Hope community service event. And Drew Hill wrote about both offseason jersey news and the new-look coaching staff. Hardiman also reported on how the city is preparing $16 million in bonds to subsidize a two-part project that includes renovations at the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds’ home, AutoZone Park. On the preps side, John Varlas featured a Houston High girls soccer team that rose to No. 1 in the nation and was on hand as Whitehaven High forced five turnovers to end Houston’s 16-game win streak in football. Here’s a look at some of the staff’s top work from the week. — Deputy sports editor Tim Buckley
