The Memphis Grizzlies opened training camp. The Memphis Tigers football team got back on track as it closed its non-conference schedule. And Tigers athletic director Ed Scott opened up regarding the university’s decision to turn down a Pac-12 invite. The week really was an eventful one for The Daily Memphian’s sports staff. Drew Hill, Chris Herrington and Parth Upadhyaya reported from Grizzlies Media Day on Monday, before the NBA team headed to Nashville for a brief preseason camp. Prior to Media Day, Hill reported on the Grizzlies’ latest injury and Ja Morant’s new Downtown mural, while Herrington presented his litany of pre-camp questions. Memphis’ first preseason game is Monday, Oct. 7, at Dallas and its first preseason home game is Oct. 10 against New Orleans. Frank Bonner II and Tim Buckley were at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium on Saturday night, when Memphis rebounded from a loss at Navy with a win over Middle Tennessee in its final non-conference game before resuming American Athletic Conference play. Before the win, Bonner delivered a moving piece on the program’s “Ultimate Tiger” and the late young fan whose memory continues to cheer on the team. The Tigers have a bye week before visiting South Florida on Oct. 11. As for conference realignment matters, Upadhyaya, Bonner and Buckley were all on hand last Thursday as Scott fielded questions regarding the Tigers’ decision to — at least for now — stick in the AAC. Upadhyaya reported in real time, while Buckley opined in the moment and later assessed where Memphis goes from here. Over the preps world, John Varlas wrote after Collierville High held off Germantown — a big win for the still-undefeated Dragons before they face White Station on Thursday night and the Red Devils travel to Bartlett on Friday night.
