The Week in Prep Sports

It was a perfect ending to a perfect season.

Houston High captured the Class AAA state title this week, ending a six-year championship drought. The Mustangs finished 22-0 after a victory against their nemesis Bearden in dramatic fashion.

Houston won on penalty kicks with goalkeeper Laila McNamee, the hero, saving two Bearden shots.

There was also a local champion in Division 2-A with ECS blanking Lausanne to win for the second-straight year. Lia Sanvee and Allie Broadway scored in the first half, and Broadway was named MVP.

Elsewhere, the Region 8-3A football playoff picture looks a lot different this week following the TSSAA’s announcement that East will forfeit four victories — including two league wins.

And as always, we need your help in identifying and spotlighting our top prep athletes. Coaches and stat-keepers can send in their scores, highlights and top performers from each game either by emailing jvarlas@dailymemphian.com or on X @johnvarlas.
