Geoff Calkins’ recent sit-down interview with Ed Scott produced plenty of interesting comments from the Memphis Tigers athletic director and a notable news story, too. Highlighting The Daily Memphian sports staff’s work for the week, Calkins wrote not only a column and a lengthy Q&A but also wrote that Scott and the university no longer have plans for a deck of mid-field seats his predecessor — Laird Veatch, who left last year for Missouri — initially planned over the top of a soon-to-be-built party deck at under-renovation Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. Calkins’ interview — among many topics — also covered what Scott had to say about conference realignment issues, an NCAA investigation into Memphis’ nationally ranked basketball program and the AD’s aim for the Tigers to be a “Top 25 athletic program in America.” Meanwhile, Parth Upadhyaya and Tim Buckley were at FedExForum on Sunday as now-No. 19 Memphis beat UAB. Upadhyaya wrote on Dain Dainja’s big game, Buckley wrote on what current Blazers and former Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy had to say about the Tigers’ NCAA Tournament worthiness, and John Martin later wrote on the job coach Penny Hardaway is doing. Next up, the Tigers hit the road for games against Tulane on Thursday night in New Orleans and Rice on Sunday afternoon in Houston. Speaking of Memphis basketball, John Varlas recently delivered a nicely done piece on Bubba Luckett — a former Tiger and CBHS’ longtime boys basketball coach. Over in the NBA world, Drew Hill wrote on Memphis Grizzlies “enforcer” Zach Edey, and Chris Herrington wrote on sharpshooter Luke Kennard’s post-trade rumors play. The Grizzlies, coming off Monday’s lopsided road loss to the New York Knicks, are at home late Thursday night against Houston before traveling to visit Milwaukee on Sunday night.
