It was thought that the Education Freedom Act passed by the state legislature might spur changes to the TSSAA’s transfer rule this week. But the state’s governing body for high school athletics sent a message: Prep sports are different from others and are worth preserving. The legislative council voted — in near-unanimous fashion — not to implement any changes to the rule, which requires athletes to sit out a calendar year unless there is a bona fide address change. Three different proposals were on the docket, including one that would have allowed essentially a one-time, no-questions-asked transfer. While noting that the proposals could be considered at another point with more concise language and more focused goals, executive director Mark Reeves said that TSSAA shouldn’t be in the business of mirroring changes currently taking place in the NCAA and in competitive travel sports. Elsewhere, postseason basketball and wrestling are right around the corner. And as always, we need your help spotlighting our top prep athletes.
