Memphis Grizzlies big man Jaren Jackson Jr. made it to San Francisco for NBA All-Star Weekend, and so did Drew Hill, The Daily Memphian Grizzlies beat writer who has a knack for finding super stories to share. Highlighting the sports staff’s work for the week, Hill wrote not only about Jackson giving full effort on All-Star Sunday but also Jackson’s interaction with a couple of kid reporters and Zack Edey and Jaylen Wells’ participation as Rising Stars in the NBA’s new-format All-Star mini-tournament. Hill then headed to Fort Worth, Texas, for TCU’s jersey retirement ceremony for Grizzlies star Desmond Bane — this coming a few days after, as Hill also reported, Memphis teammate Luke Kennard had the court named after him by his Ohio high school. Chris Herrington supplemented Grizzlies coverage during the break with a couple of mid-season mailbags, an always-insightful delivery. Hill wasn’t the only Daily Memphian sports writer to hit the road in the past week, as Parth Upadhyaya first was in Tampa, Florida, for the Memphis Tigers’ win over South Florida and then in Wichita, Kansas, for their overtime loss to Wichita State. Upadhyaya and John Martin have been writing extensively about the Tigers’ hopes for a high NCAA Tournament seed, which took a hit with Memphis’ loss to the Shockers. As Penny Hardaway’s team prepares for soon-to-come postseason play, Frank Bonner II wrote about opening day for baseball coach Matt Riser’s Tigers. Finally, in the preps world, John Varlas reported on a St. George’s wrestler bringing home a state championship and a local trio named finalists for the TSSAA’s Mr. and Miss Basketball statewide awards. Here’s a look at some of the staff’s top work for the week: — Deputy sports editor Tim Buckley
