The Week in Prep Sports

Two local high school teams made their debuts at the TSSAA girls state tournament this week. And while the end results were ultimately the same, they took quite different paths to get there.

In Class 2A, Memphis Business Academy dominated several statistical categories in their game against tournament veteran York Institute. But the Execs also had more turnovers, including a key one with nine seconds left. That led to a 44-43 loss that left the team frustrated at having come so close yet at the same time optimistic for the future.

Middle College was also feeling good about its future in Class 1A despite a 68-32 defeat to a strong Van Buren team. The Bulldogs end their best season in school history with a 25-9 record and, like Memphis Business Academy, will return several key contributors for next season.

And as always, we need your help in spotlighting our best high school athletes. Spring sports are fully underway and coaches and stat-keepers are encouraged to send us their scores, highlights and top performers following each game. Email jvarlas@dailymemphian.com or tweet @johnvarlas.
