It’s all about the Memphis Grizzlies this week. The city’s NBA franchise is fighting for its postseason life, and Drew Hill is in San Francisco for the Grizzlies’ play-in game tonight (9 p.m. CDT, TNT) against the Golden Warriors. If Memphis wins, it’s in the playoffs as the No. 7 seed and will face the No. 2 seed Houston Rockets. If Memphis loses, it gets a last-chance game Friday night at FedExForum against the winner of Wednesday’s game between the Sacramento Kings and the Dallas Mavericks. Hill made the long trip to Denver last Friday and got there just in time for the Grizzlies’ final road game, a loss to the Nuggets, then returned home and was joined by Chris Herrington and Geoff Calkins for Sunday’s regular season-ending home win against the Mavs. Calkins delivered a nice piece setting the scene inside the concourse at FedExForum and teamed with Hill and Herrington to tell you all you need to know about the Grizzlies-Warriors matchup. Meanwhile, Frank Bonner II was busy last week writing news on the Memphis Tigers football NCAA transfer-portal news front, a spring practice feature on Penn State transfer tight end Jerry Cross and another feature about six women who play key roles in the program. Parth Upadhyaya had some basketball portal news, including Ashton Hardaway’s decision to rejoin his father Penny in Memphis, while John Martin weighed in with an interesting column on NIL money matters and the Tigers. Upadhyaya also spent some of his Saturday at Memphis’ Laurie-Walton Family Basketball Center for the inaugural Power of Girls in Sports Clinic where he caught up with Tigers women’s soccer Brooks Monaghan for some insight on how Monaghan’s program will be impacted by the current NCAA climate. Later Saturday, Tim Buckley was at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium as the UFL’s Memphis Showboats fell to the Houston Roughnecks and dropped to 0-3. The Showboats play their next three in a row on the road, starting Friday (7 p.m., Fox) in Detroit against the Michigan Panthers. But the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds are in town this week, opening a six-game series tonight (6:45 p.m.) at AutoZone Park against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp after going 2-4 in Nashville in a series that started last Tuesday. On the preps front, John Varlas was at Houston High on Saturday for the big track meet held there. On Monday, Varlas was at Briarcrest for the Saints’ big baseball win against CBHS in the first meeting between the two teams since the 2024 Division 2-AA state-championship game in Murfreesboro. Earlier Monday, Varlas profiled Phinn Waters, the Saints ace who plans to pitch next season for the Texas Longhorns. Here’s a look at some of the staff’s top work from the week. — Deputy sports editor Tim Buckley
