The Week in Prep Sports

Two years ago, Miles Nesmith was on the verge of quitting the triple jump for good.

His coach at Central convinced him to give it one more try, though, and Nesmith responded with a personal best. Fast-forward, and the junior is now the nation’s best with a state record already to his credit this spring.

Briarcrest pitcher Phinn Waters is going places, too. The junior left-hander is committed to play at Texas, and while he didn’t have his best game against CBHS this week, his team still picked up a key win.

Houston also posted a big victory against rival Collierville, pushing home two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

We also remembered Jack Grannan, a towering figure at now-closed Bishop Byrne.

And as always, we need your help in spotlighting our top prep performers. Coaches and stat-keepers can send in their scores, highlights and top performers from each game. Email jvarlas@dailymemphian.com or tweet @johnvarlas.
