About Town

In this week’s About Town, we learn the storied history of Cooper-Young’s Burke’s Book Store. And the nonprofit behind the restoration of Downtown’s Clayborn Temple pledges to rebuild after most of the historic church was destroyed in a fire.

And just a head’s up: This will be the last edition of the About Town newsletter. In its place, we’re launching a new, subscriber-only, arts-and-culture newsletter called Arts Beat. It’ll be a weekly deep dive into visual art, music, dance, theater, literature, fashion, film and more. Sign up here if you’re a subscriber. If you’re not yet a subscriber, you can become one here first.

Our neighborhood coverage isn’t going anywhere though; you can still find all of that under the Neighborhoods tab on our website.

We hope you enjoy reading the latest news stories from our community. If you’re a Daily Memphian subscriber, we appreciate your support. If not, please subscribe for unlimited access to quality, locally produced journalism.

Founded in Downtown Memphis in the decade after the Civil War, Burke’s Book Store has survived through four locations, six sets of owners, and a rapidly changing retail landscape that has devoured many larger bookstores.
