The Week in Prep Sports

Gavin Gatere is the best sprinter at MUS. He’s also the best discus thrower.

Those two track and field events are about as different as they can be, but Gatere somehow makes it work. He set school records in both last month and that versatility makes him one of the favorites for the upcoming Division 2-AA state decathlon.

Briarcrest meanwhile took a step toward also returning to Spring Fling. The 2024 state baseball champions got plenty of offense in a region championship victory against CBHS, just one of the reasons it was a special day for Coach Craig Hopkins.

And with the final event on the state’s sports calendar rapidly approaching, we need your help in spotlighing our best athletes. Coaches and stat-keepers can send in their scores, highlights and top performers from each game. Email javarlas@dailymemphian.com or tweet @johnvarlas.
