A car theft in Eads, a tire shop in Berclair and an arson in Hickory Hill were among the events and places that led cops to arrest a 21-year-old suspect in a deadly mass shooting last month, according to an affidavit obtained by The Daily Memphian. One person died and five others were injured in the shooting outside of a meeting of Memphis Allies, a gun-violence prevention organization. The man arrested in connection to the crime is charged with facilitation of felony first-degree murder, theft and arson; the investigation continues as MPD is looking for more suspects, and the CrimeStoppers reward has been increased to $50,000.

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, appears to be exploring how to generate electricity for its second data center in Memphis. And those plans could involve a former natural gas plant in Southaven, Mississippi. For weeks, The Daily Memphian observed workers traveling south along Tulane Road — from xAI’s second Memphis site to several locations in Southaven along Tulane Road and Stanton Road and then back north again. The state border is also invoked in the name of the partnership xAI has formed with Solaris Energy Infrastructure, called Stateline Power Solutions, which could supply up to 900 megawatts of electric capacity as an off-grid solution to powering xAI’s second Memphis data center.

Also, the Tennessee Court of Appeals sided with the City of Memphis in a lawsuit brought by a woman whom Cleotha Abston raped in 2021; a bill that passed the Tennessee General Assembly this spring appears to have effectively banned minority contracting programs statewide; and city and county leaders broke ground Friday, May 16, on the $30 million redevelopment of the Southwest Twin Drive-In site in Westwood.
