Jaren Jackson Jr. failed to make one of the NBA’s three All-NBA teams last Friday, denying the Memphis Grizzlies forward immediate supermax contract eligibility. When the news broke, Chris Herrington was ready to break down all of the development’s many implications — and Herrington did a super job making a complicated situation as easy as it possibly could be to understand. That highlighted The Daily Memphian sports staff’s work during a week that also saw Parth Upadhyaya report and John Martin opine on Memphis Tigers guard PJ Haggerty’s decision to join the Kansas State Wildcats out of the NCAA transfer portal. Frank Bonner II wrote about the sparse crowd at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium for the Memphis Showboats’ Memorial Day weekend game on a wet Saturday, and Tim Buckley captured the special night Germantown High product Ben Johnson became the winningest manager in Memphis Redbirds history. Memorial Day weekend also meant an end to Spring Fling week in Murfreesboro, where John Varlas wrapped a terrific run of high school spring sports coverage that included state championships for the Lakeland Prep baseball team, the Lausanne boys and girls tennis teams, girls track and field teams from both Harding and Collierville High and the ECS girls lacrosse team. The Memphis area also produced two individual girls state tennis titles, a baker’s dozen track relay state championships and winners in a couple dozen individual track and field events including a whopping four from Collierville’s Khari Webb and four more from St. George’s Kimbriel Winfield. Here’s a look at some of the staff’s top work from the week: — Deputy sports editor Tim Buckley
