Loca high school baseball standouts, current and past, were in the spotlight this week.

Five players with area ties were selected in the Major League Draft with Ryan Mitchell heading the way. Houston’s shortstop was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round, capping off a senior year that saw him when Daily Memphian player of the year honors.

Mitchell will aim to follow the path of Brent Rooker, the ECS grad who played in his second all-star game. Rooker also took part in the home run derby where he fulfilled a promise to a former coach.
