Postseason action took center stage in Shelby County this week. In volleyball, Arlington avenged a loss to Houston with a victory against the Mustangs in the final of the Region 8-AAA tournament. It’s been a special season for Kenzie Cooley’s girls, and it could become even more special. Arlington is one victory away from its first state tournament trip. In soccer, rivals ECS and St. George’s met in the Division 2-A region final, and it was another classic. The Eagles scored late in overtime to send the match to penalties when they went on to win thanks to some fine goalkeeping from Molly Fuhrman. Fall break means the Week 9 football schedule is a bit lighter than normal this week. But a featured game between two Dandy Dozen teams, and two of the city’s oldest programs, will certainly be worth watching. And as always, we need your help in spotlighting our high school athletes. Coaches and stat-keepers can send in their scores, highlights and top performers from each game by emailing jvarlas@dailymemphian.com or on X @johnvarlas.
