The Week in Prep Sports

The BlueCross Bowl in Chattanooga takes place this weekend without any local representation after Southwind and Covington both lost in their respective semifinals.

But 10 years ago, an unlikely team from Memphis was front and center on Tennessee high school football’s biggest stage.

Led by coach Teli White, Trezevant captured a state title that year, capping a wholesale culture change that began when he took over the program years prior. And along with bringing home a gold ball, the Bears shattered preconceived notions about “Memphis” kids.

Elsewhere, basketball and wrestling seasons are well underway, and as always, we need your help in spotlighting our best high school athletes. Coaches and stat-keepers can send in their scores, highlights and top performers from each game either by emailing jvarlas@dailymemphian.com or on X @johnvarlas.
