The Week in Prep Sports

Two local basketball teams with eyes on making a March run flexed their muscles this week. In Class 4A, a re-tooled Whitehaven squad defeated Southwind in a game featuring two state-ranked teams. After losing several seniors, coach Willie Kemp brought in several news faces. It’s taken time to gel. But beating a good Southwind team on the road is a strong indicator of things to come. Briarcrest, meanwhile, has several players who have been together for years, most notably senior Fred Smith Jr. and he was instrumental in a Division 2-AA rivalry win over MUS. And as always, we need your help in shining a spotlight on our best high school athletes. Coaches and stat-keepers can send in their scores, highlights and top performers from each game either by e-mailing jvarlas@dailymemphian.com or via Twitter @johnvarlas.

Tigers coach Willie Kemp likes the way his team is coming together after getting the victory in a battle of state-ranked Class 4A teams.
